Community Chanukah Celebration
& Menorah Lighting

Tuesday, December 19, 6:00pm
Village Green and Blakely Hall
For the second year, the Issaquah Highlands Chanukah Celebration
will add to the already lively, fun-filled mix of winter
holiday events in the Issaquah area. The Chanukah Party
& Giant Menorah Lighting takes place on Tuesday, December
19th, 6:00 P.M. at Village Green, with Issaquah Mayor Ava
Frisinger having the honor of lighting the menorah (Chanukah
candelabra).
Chanukah is the eight-day Jewish “Festival of Lights,” this
year beginning on the evening of December 15th. Each evening
at sunset an additional candle is lit to commemorate the rededication
of the Temple in Jerusalem some 2000 years ago.
The holiday also celebrates the miracle of one day’s worth of
pure ritual oil burning for eight days until a new supply could
be obtained.
“The message of Chanukah,” explains Rabbi Berry Farkash,
Executive Director of Chabad Jewish Center of the Central
Cascades, “is one of hope in the face of extreme adversity.
It’s a message with broad appeal to everyone who believes in
religious freedom and that faith and determination can triumph against
even the most overwhelming odds.”
People of all ages will enjoy singing traditional songs like “Rock of
Ages” and “The Dreidel Song,” and eating the free, delectable holiday
treats, including tasty potato latkes (pancakes) with applesauce and
sour cream, jelly doughnuts, plus chocolate Chanukah gelt (coins) and
prizes for the children.
The Jewish Juniors Club will also be making gifts and presenting them
at the Chanukah celebration for the children at Seattle area hospitals.
This Chanukah event was made possible through the efforts of Issaquah
Highlands, Port Blakely Communities, and Chabad of the Central
Cascades. The Menorah was co-sponsored by Morris Piha Real Estate
Services.
Chabad Jewish Center of the Central Cascades is a non-profit organization
dedicated to Jewish worship and study, and to fostering an appreciation
of Jewish cultural heritage. Chabad of the Central Cascades will
also place a giant 6-foot Menorah in downtown Issaquah (Front Street
corner Dogwood), with lighting by Rabbi Berry Farkash every night of
Chanukah beginning Friday December 15th at 4:00pm.
