While the cold, gloomy days of winter continue and we spend more time indoors, this can be a great time to organize and prepare for potential emergencies, like earthquakes or winter storms, that could cause extensive power outages. Highlands Fiber Network (HFN) is prepared for extensive power outages. To get you started, here are a few things you can do to ensure your technology is prepared for an emergency.
Power Outages
If the power goes out in your home, you will be without internet and, possibly, phone service. Cell phones will generally still work but need to recharge often.
An uninterrupted power supply (UPS) can supply power to the HFN portal, routers, and cordless phone equipment in your home. You can continue accessing the internet on a laptop or tablet. The UPS stays connected and will kick on when needed. They can be purchased locally, come in various sizes, and can supply power for several hours.
In case of a power outage, consider purchasing an external power supply so you can fully charge your cell phone. There are also solar-powered external power supplies available on the market, or you can always plug them into your car if needed.
A small (1,000 watt) portable generator can be used for your refrigerator when the power is out for days. Only use a generator outdoors and away from windows.
Data Loss
Most people have all their contacts and other important information on their cell phones and portable devices. If those devices get lost or damaged, you could lose all that information when you need it most. Consider using cloud storage for contacts, calendars, and other important information. Cloud storage services can be accessed from anywhere.
Password manager services can store passwords for all your sensitive data, like credit card information. Other online services make continuous backups of all your important data to the cloud.
Ideally, if your cell phone is damaged, you can replace it and reconnect all your data quickly.
By taking time to prepare now, your technology will be ready should disaster strike.
