June Volunteer of the Month: Aroob “Ruby” Adbdelhamid

By July 22, 2024General, Volunteer

Congratulations to Black Nugget Park resident Aroob “Ruby” Abdelhamid for being selected as June’s Volunteer of the Month! Most recently, Ruby helped to plan our Global Grub & Groove celebration of Eid al-Adha on June 21. Last fall, she re-launched Co-Working Group on Tuesdays at Blakely Hall (currently paused for summer camps). She is also a member of the Issaquah Highlands Equity Committee and Program Committee, working hard to ensure events in Issaquah Highlands are inclusive of all people. Thanks for all you do, Ruby!

She had the following to say about his time volunteering and living in Issaquah Highlands:

When did you move to Issaquah Highlands? And from where?

We moved here from New Hampshire in the middle of 2023.

What brought you to Issaquah Highlands? What do you like best about living here?

We came to Issaquah Highlands because of the number of trails in this area. I love being outside, and Issaquah Highlands is full of opportunities to be outside. I love how involved the community is – that is not something I was expecting. The community groups and events are a great way to make friends!

Could you tell us about yourself?

I love to read, run, sew clothes (I am not good yet!), talk to loved ones, and I love to learn!

How did you become involved as a volunteer in Issaquah Highlands?

I go to Blakely Hall to work sometimes. I learned about so much going on that I couldn’t help but get involved! I think the FOMO (Fear of Missing Out) got to me.

Tell us about your experience as a committee member and community group leader?

I met lots of people and got to learn how the community operated, and I love that I have a say in the direction of where my community goes.

What advice would you give to others about volunteering in Issaquah Highlands?

If you have seen the Netflix show “Live to 100: Secrets of the Blue Zones,” you will know that one defining feature of these Blue Zones is a strong sense of community. Volunteering will truly help you live longer, and it’s free! Honestly, you get so much more back when you give in. So, I say just jump in and do it!

Anything you’d like to add?

Thank you for letting me work day in and day out at Blakely Hall! I’ve had a great time!
