July Volunteer of the Month: Shaurya Behera

By July 30, 2025July 31st, 2025General, Volunteer

Congratulations to Park Drive resident Shaurya Behera for being recognized as our July Volunteer of the Month!

Leadership comes in many forms, and one of the most powerful is leading by example. Shaurya does this every time he shows up—through his actions, his attitude and his work ethic. You can often find him at community events, lifting all the heaviest loads and setting the pace for the rest of the Highlands Youth (HY) Advisory Board. Shaurya always shows what it means to be dependable and hardworking. We’re lucky to have him on the board!

Shaurya had the following to say about his time volunteering and living in Issaquah Highlands:

***

What brought your family to Issaquah Highlands?

My family and I moved to the Highlands in 2013, shortly after my little sister was born. Our old home in Bellevue no longer felt big enough for the four of us, so we began looking for a new place to settle down. My mother had several friends living in Issaquah Highlands who highly recommended it, so my parents decided to explore the area. I’m glad they did, growing up anywhere else wouldn’t have felt the same.

What do you like best about living in Issaquah Highlands?

There’s a lot I love about living in Issaquah Highlands, but if I had to choose a favorite, it would definitely be the environment. There’s plenty of greenery and natural features that make every part of the neighborhood feel alive. It’s open and welcoming yet still manages to feel small and cozy at the same time.

Could you tell us about your family?

Both of my parents are from India. They taught me to treat others with kindness and to help whenever I can. Since my father passed away four years ago, it’s been just my mom, my 12‑year‑old sister, and me. It’s been rough at times, but they’ve always supported me, and I strive to be someone they can be proud of.

How did you become involved as a volunteer in Issaquah Highlands?

After my father passed away, I was overwhelmed by the support I received from the community and those around me. Experiencing such kindness during one of the lowest points in my life made me want to give back in some way. That’s what led me to apply for the HY Board, which I had heard about through some family friends. Since joining, I’ve had many opportunities to help out, and it’s been one of the most rewarding experiences of my life.

Tell us about your experience as a volunteer and on the HY Board.

My experience on the HY Board over the past few years has been amazing. There’s such a variety of personalities, and it’s tons of fun. Everyone is kind and thoughtful, yet they also show responsibility and competence when it matters most. Some of my favorite moments have been helping set up large social events and then staying to watch everyone enjoy them. It’s a special feeling to see the fruits of your labor, and I’ve picked up many valuable skills along the way.

What advice would you give to other teens and/or adults about volunteering in Issaquah Highlands?

My advice to anyone who wants to volunteer is simple: don’t hesitate, just go for it. Find something you can help with that genuinely interests you and sign up. Through volunteering, you can learn so many new skills, meet new people and gain valuable experiences. There are countless benefits to volunteering, but the first step is to simply get out there and start.

Anything you’d like to add?

I’m thankful. Not just to this land or neighborhood, but to all the people who make this community what it is. Thank you all for making this place feel like home.
