August Volunteer of the Month: Karla Garcia

By August 26, 2024August 29th, 2024General, Volunteer

Congratulations to Issaquah Highlands resident Karla Garcia for being selected as August’s Volunteer of the Month! This summer, she stepped up to help coordinate the Global Grub & Groove celebration of Mexican culture (including securing a new mariachi band after a last-minute cancellation). Karla is also an important voice on the Highlands Council Equity Committee as well as the Highlands Council Programming Committee, where she is always sharing ideas for more inclusive community events. Thanks for all you do, Karla!

She had the following to say about her time volunteering and living in Issaquah Highlands:

What brought you to Issaquah Highlands?

We got here by luck actually. When looking for a home in the area, a friend asked me why not to include Issaquah in my search. I am grateful we did!

What do you like best about living in Issaquah Highlands?

Everything! The landscapes, the sunsets, the businesses around, the community newspaper, the frequent events, etc.  I love that it is like a mini city within a big city. We have many shops to buy from and many beautiful dog parks! I love the events and the many opportunities we are offered to connect with our neighbors.

Could you tell us about your family?

Yes! I have a husband named Carlos and he is also from Mexico, like me! We are the happy dog parents of two senior ladies! Bella and Cher are both 13 years old.

How did you become involved as a volunteer in Issaquah Highlands?

I saw the posting to become a volunteer for the Highlands Council Equity Committee, so I joined to represent the Latina community! Then, I found out about the Highlands Council Programming Committee. Since I love events, I decided to join as well.

Tell us about your experience as a volunteer.

Through my volunteering experience in both committees, my favorite part has been to realize how lucky we are to live in a neighborhood where the Issaquah Highlands Community Association (IHCA) and Highlands Council truly care about their community. Lindsey and Kim are very hardworking and kind people who care about inclusion and building a good community where everyone feels welcomed.

What advice would you give to others about volunteering in Issaquah Highlands?

Go for it! There is always something for everyone. We all have different skillsets, and our opinions are really valued.
