PSE Needs Your Help to Protect Our Community
With wildfire season already underway, it’s a good time to remind our customers that Puget Sound Energy (PSE) operates the electric system more conservatively during the summer months to help prevent wildfires.
When weather conditions are severe, we may turn on Enhanced Powerline Settings (EPS) or use a Public Safety Power Shutoff (PSPS). These safety measures may result in power outages that could last several hours or several days, so it’s important to be prepared.
“We’re working year-round to prevent wildfires in our service area by strengthening the grid and enhancing our situational awareness,” said Ryan Murphy, PSE’s director of electric operations. “Our operating protocols may lead to service interruptions under certain conditions, but they are a very important tool to keep our communities safe.”
Here are five ways you can prepare for power outages this summer:
- Make sure your PSE account contact information is up to date and check your notification preferences.
- Stock up on nonperishable food and water, at least a three-day supply, for people and pets.
- Have a flashlight, battery-operated fans and back-up phone charger on hand.
- Keep vehicles fully charged or gas tanks full.
- If the power is out, close blinds and curtains to block direct sunlight. In the evening, open them back up for cross ventilation.
If you use medical equipment that relies on power, wildfire season can bring added risks. Customers enrolled in PSE’s Life Support Program receive additional notifications of potential Public Safety Power Shutoffs. Visit PSE.com/Medical or call 1-888-225-5773 to enroll.
PSE’s wildfire safe operations are part of our broader effort to protect the region from wildfires by investing in an electric system that is reliable, resilient, and above all, safe. Learn more about our ongoing efforts at PSE.com/Wildfire.
