Puget Sound Energy (PSE) plans to open multiple community solar arrays throughout King County in 2025, significantly expanding access for customers who want to participate in the renewable energy transition without installing solar panels on their own properties.
The four new Community Solar projects will be installed in Auburn, Kent (two locations), and Renton, adding more than one megawatt of solar energy capacity to King County. This renewable energy generation is equivalent to meeting the annual electricity needs of about 150 typical households for a year.
“Community Solar makes clean energy accessible to any PSE customer who wants to support local renewable development,” said PSE Chief Customer and Transformation Officer Aaron August. “Whether you’re a renter, live in a condominium, or simply want to reduce your carbon footprint without installation costs or ongoing maintenance responsibilities, these projects provide a simple pathway to participate in a cleaner energy future.”
The four new King County Community Solar projects will offer more than 800 available shares to interested customers, allowing them to benefit from solar energy without the typical barriers of rooftop installation. Participants can support clean energy development while helping fund solar arrays for nonprofits, affordable housing providers and tribal entities.
Key benefits of PSE’s Community Solar program include:
- Eliminating installation costs, timelines and maintenance concerns
- Providing solar access for renters and condominium residents, or homeowners without solar
- Supporting customers who want to accelerate their clean energy journey ahead of PSE’s energy policy timeline goals
- Contributing to PSE’s Clean Energy Implementation Plan energy capacity goals
The expansion represents PSE’s commitment to diversifying its fuel mix and providing customers with flexible options to reduce their personal carbon footprints while supporting the broader clean energy transition.
