February Volunteer of the Month: Kate Brickell

By February 25, 2025General, Volunteer

Congratulations to Huckleberry Circle resident Kate Brickell for being recognized as our February Volunteer of the Month!

Kate stands out for her involvement in the community in addition to the Issaquah Highlands Community Association’s (IHCA) Playground Improvement Committee (PIC). She plays an instrumental role in the leadership of the PIC, sharing her perspective as a parent of three small children to assist with the HOA’s redesign of our community parks. She regularly participates in Keep Issaquah Beautiful Day and attends community events like Global Grub & Groove, Swap ‘N Share and more. We are thankful for all she does to ensure our parks are safe and enjoyable for all residents!

Kate had the following to say about her time volunteering and living in Issaquah Highlands:

***

I moved from Honolulu, Hawaii, to the Seattle area in 2010 to attend the University of Washington. After living in a few places around King County, my partner and I chose to make Issaquah Highlands our home when I was pregnant with our first child. The green mountains and comforting valley drew us to Issaquah. The clean fresh air and connection to the outdoors were gifts we wanted to give our growing family. My partner and I now chase after our 6-year-old daughter, 4-year-old son, and 1.5-year-old baby. We also live with an aging cranky cat.

We chose Issaquah Highlands in part for the parks and walkability. We love that we can walk our children to Aster Montessori and Grand Ridge Elementary. Being born and raised in Hawaii, I am deeply committed to community. I have seen the transformational power that community can create in my employment at Open Arms Perinatal Services.

I was so excited when the opportunity came up to participate in the Issaquah Highlands community in a formal capacity by joining the IHCA Playground Improvement Committee. We enjoy the parks daily with our children. I was so thankful to be invited onto this committee to share my lived experience as a parent. I have been honored to work on the PIC alongside other parents and respected community members. Reach out and join us! It’s not as scary or intimidating as it might seem.

If you see me around, please feel free to say hi. I love meeting and connecting with folks in our community. Thank you for this honor and I look forward to continuing to serve Issaquah Highlands.
