Keeping your home’s plumbing in good shape starts with a few simple checks that every homeowner should know. From locating your water shutoff valve to understanding your home’s water pressure, these quick tips can help you prevent small issues from turning into expensive emergencies.
1. Where is your water shut off valve?
Everyone in your house should know this. Label it, show family members, and make sure the space is clear. We’ve seen folks panic and have to call 911 because they don’t know where to go while water is pouring through their ceiling. Don’t have a functional shut off valve? You can purchase this handy water meter key and shut it off at the meter box in front of your property.
2. What is your water pressure?
We’re not talking about shower pressure, but the pressure moving through your home’s pipes. If it’s above 80 PSI, it can strain your plumbing system and fixtures over time—similar to untreated high blood pressure. A pressure-reducing valve can help keep things in check. This cheap gauge is an easy DIY method of figuring out your home pressure. Simply put it on an outdoor hose spigot and get a reading in less than five seconds.
3. Frequent toilet clogs?
Plungers sometimes can’t get it done. We like to use toilet augers, which clear the toilet’s p-trap. This simple tool is great for a quick clear. Just be careful not to scratch the toilet bowl!
4. Are sporadic leaks under a sink or fixture making you nervous?
Get a leak alarm to let you know there’s water before it ruins a cabinet/flooring.
5. Are your pipes built to last?
If your home has PEX or copper water supply lines, you’re generally in great shape—those materials are reliable and long-lasting. The same goes for ABS (black) drain lines. But if you have CPVC, galvanized or poly water supply lines, keep a close eye out for leaks or consider planning for replacement, especially if this is your “forever home.” Many insurance carriers are now requiring homeowners to update these older plumbing materials.
