Last Thursday, Aug. 18, youth residents of Issaquah Highlands had the opportunity to work alongside professional artist Soo Hong to transform a baby grand piano into a work of art.
A local favorite known for her “Raindrops” exhibition at Blakely Hall, Soo painted a background image on the piano, which was placed in Grand Ridge Plaza (next to the Big Fish patio).
Six teens – Sydney Evans, Sydney Kapustein, Vernika Jain, Zoe Mockford, Lily Pinkston and Audrey Short – then added their own artwork on top of Soo’s to reflect what “home” means to them. Their art showcases their interests such as characters from popular television shows, musical instruments, the Issaquah High School logo, and abstract art.
“It was really great to work with Soo on the piano. She talked to us about the theme for it and how this artwork would symbolize our home and sense of belonging,” said Sydney Evans, Wisteria Park resident. “It was a wonderful experience and I hope to be able to do it again!”
The piano, generously provided by Regency Centers and Classic Pianos, will be available for viewing and playing (yes, everyone is welcome to play the piano during daylight hours – it’s locked at night) through Sept. 5.
