Nearly 30 elementary-aged students attended Parent’s Night Out at Blakely Hall on Dec. 1! In this “Home Alone” inspired event, kids participated in activities and games to crack the mystery of the missing marshmallows!
Here’s a recap of all the things we did together:
The Mystery of the Marshmallow Thief
To start off the night, the marshmallows for our hot chocolate were stolen by a mysterious thief. Highlands Youth (HY) Advisory Board members arranged a variety of games and crafts for the kids to play, and they received clues each time they finished a station.
HY member Lexi tells the story of the marshmallow thief to the children before they begin the night’s activities.
DIY Snow Making
One of the activities followed a DIY snow making recipe. Kids got to make homemade snow and had loads of fun creating it.
Two attendees make their own snow to celebrate the winter weather indoors.
A boy makes snow with HY board members Grace and Aarushi.
Beaded Snowflake Crafting
With the use of pipe cleaners and colorful beads, kids were able to make beautiful and unique snowflakes!
Several kids carefully craft their snowflakes with HY board members Nicole and Maia.
Snowball Launcher Making
Cups, balloons, and snowballs were used to launch snowballs very far! Kids had lots of fun loading snowballs and shooting them over long distances in this activity.
Making snowball launchers was a blast for kids and HY board members alike!
Antler Ring Toss
In a game that requires good accuracy, kids did their best to toss rings on a reindeer’s antlers.
HY board member Cash was brave enough to wear the antlers.
Kids tossed several rings with great accuracy.
Obstacle Course
In this game, kids quickly navigated through tubes, hula hoops and various obstacles ropes to try and beat other competitors!
Two boys race to try and be first to reach the end of the obstacle course as HY board members Haley, Ashwin and Arya cheer them on.
Two kids are about to finish the race.
Match the Presents
The kids participated in a game where they opened several presents. Each box had a different duck, and the goal was to match them all!
HY Board member Viggy hosts the matching game. Three kids try to find matching ducks.
Snowball Toss
Kids got to practice their snowball-throwing skills ahead of the first snowfall.
HY board members Viggy and Shaurya watch as a boy takes his shot.
Pin the Nose on the Snowman
While blindfolded, kids tried to stick all of the snowman’s features onto its face. They took many tries to get the placements just right!
HY board member Avik encourages a girl as she places a carrot to finish the snowman.
The Question of the Marshmallow Thief
Kids got hints and clues about a marshmallow thief at Blakely Hall throughout all the games and crafts they visited. After finishing the stations, they brainstormed ideas to discuss who the marshmallow thief might be.
As all the kids gather their goodies in their bags, HY board member Lexi talks about the mystery thief. Kids discuss their guesses of who the thief could be.
The Reveal of the Marshmallow Thief
After discussing their answers, the kids figured out that a yeti had stolen the marshmallows! They quickly find the yeti next door and rush to catch them.
Children rush to meet the yeti, who took their marshmallows.
HY board member Saira dressed up as the yeti.
The children talked with the yeti and learned that they don’t get to enjoy marshmallows in the Arctic. They agreed to watch “Home Alone,” while enjoying hot chocolate and marshmallows together.
Two children pose with HY board member Saira as the yeti.
