Earlier this month, Superintendent Heather Tow-Yick held an open public forum to continue discussions centered around experiences and perspectives from families, staff and community members in Issaquah School District.
The goal of the forum was to recognize common needs throughout ISD in order to advise and shape future planning and district priorities.
Tow-Yick said the community forum featured many powerful moments from ISD families and staff members. One trend from attendees highlighted the need for “clearly established relationships between the importance of social, emotional, mental health and education.”
Another trend identified an “appreciation and passion” for growing programs throughout the district, she said. It’s clear that art, athletics, robotics and sciences provide real-world experiences and employment opportunities.
A third trend focused on preparing students for college and career options after high school. Tow-Yick said life options are “necessary to navigate a complex world,” while working to develop skills for adulthood and pursuing what makes them happy.
Additionally, she noted that another important trend is “inclusion for all and the desire for more engagement,” which requires a shift in efforts to bring together “whole group commentary.”
While conversations progress, Tow-Yick is asking for ongoing community feedback. The next phase of her plan emphasizes key priorities for the next fiscal year based on findings from listening, learning and engaging with students and staff.
